As we prepare to step into 2026, I want to share a simple yet profound encouragement with you:
Write the vision.
In Habakkuk 2:2, God tells the prophet, “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that he who reads it may run.”
Now, before we take this verse out of context, let me first acknowledge that this message from God was never about New Year’s resolutions, getting in shape, or setting personal goals. Habakkuk wasn’t being told to plan his upcoming year or get his life organized, he was receiving a prophecy about the people of Babylon—events that eventually unfolded about a hundred years later.
Yet, there is a timeless truth in these words from God. God’s instruction to “write the vision” reminds us of the power of writing things down. When we put our thoughts, goals, and dreams—and even Babylonian prophecies—into words, we give ourselves a clear direction to follow. The written word gives us clarity to “run”.
Even still, life never seems to go completely to plan. There will always be ebbs and flows on this earth. But aiming at nothing is a mistake as well! As Zig Ziglar once famously said, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.”
So, as you move into 2026, I encourage you to take this moment to pause, pray, and ask God for guidance:
“Father, what do You want this year to look like for me?”
Writing down your vision does not promise a perfect year, but it does position you to stay focused and run the race that God has for you. If you are God’s handiwork (Ephesians 2:10), then you have been created for unique purposes—with specific talents, callings, and opportunities that only you can fulfill.
My personal practice over the last few years has been to use a system created by my mentor and friend, Todd Durkin, called the God-Sized Dreams system. His prompts have greatly helped me to pause and consider what truly matters:
- What went well this past year?
- What do I want the next year to look like?
- What dreams have I neglected?
- What dreams do I need to pursue?
By writing your goals down, you are able to focus on what truly matters. So here is my encouragement this New Years:
Write the vision. Make it plain on tablets (or on paper!) so that when you read it, you may run. Life will bring surprises, curveballs, and unexpected trials, but clarity, prayer, and faith will help you step into 2026 with purpose.
Happy New Year, my friend. Let’s make it a great one!
